I spoke to a client who gives presentations on a regular basis to engineers who are usually in their late 20’s to early 30’s. One of his challenges on how to do this comes from the fact that when surveyed the group consistently said they hated PowerPoint. This left him wondering what he could present.

It can be hard to command the attention of any group. With advancements in technology, people want to be entertained. The danger with PowerPoint is when the speaker relies on the slides to tell the story. The slides are merely there to emphasize a point, show a graphic or just to make sure you stay on course of your topic. You should never be reading the slides to the audience.

This article, “What’s the Problem with Creating a Powerpoint?”  really hits home with the fact that you don’t create a presentation, YOU ARE the presentation.  People come to hear you speak and it gives you the chance to show your expertise in the topic.

The next time you are creating a PowerPoint keep these thoughts in mind and you will be sure to offer your audience a better experience and one that will brand you as the expert on your topic.
