Every generation adopts its own style of dressing, music and habits which usually confuse anyone who is not a part of this group. Language and slang terms were another way to communicate in a way that could only be understood by their peers.
Millennials might have started using emogis as fun shorthand to show how they were feeling, but Gen Z has turned it into its own personal language. Their reliance on text as a way to communicate means the emogi is becoming a fast way to relay their message. Apple never wants to be left out and recently introduced a new series of emogis that to most will seem random but to Gen Z they are an entirely new language that they can use to talk to friends. As an added bonus these messages become more difficult for their parents to decipher.
Using pictures to talk goes back a long way. Cave pictures were how early people told stories and communicated with each other. Ancient Egypt used hieroglyphics as early attempts at language. Archeologists still study these to learn more about how communication evolved and what was happening at the time.
Gen Z seems to find using these pictures is easier than verbally expressing their thoughts. If you don’t believe that spend some time with them and you will see them texting people in the same proximity when they could easily speak to them directly.
Millennials started shortening words when they texted such as TY (Thank you), LOL (laugh out loud) BRB (Be right Back) and B4 (before). For them the emogi was just a smiley face to convey some emotion or add a bit of humor to their messages. This new influx of emogis is giving a whole new generation more ways to say more with pictures rather than relying on typing words.
Tell us what you think; do you think moving away from traditional writing and sentence structure to a picture based form of communication is progress?
